The icon “Unquenchable Candle” depicts the Mother of God in the form of a nun holding a staff and rosary in her left hand, and a candle in her right. This amazing image is located in the Alekseyevsky monastery of the city of Uglich, Yaroslavl province, and attracts attention with its special energy and grace. The icon was kept in the monastery’s storeroom for a long time, until in 1894 a sick merchant from St. Petersburg came to the monastery. In a dream, the Mother of God appeared to him, telling him to go to Uglich and pray in front of Her icon for healing. The abbot of the monastery, after listening to the merchant’s story, ordered to find the icon, and after that it was transferred with great celebration to the Assumption Church. After praying in front of the icon, the merchant miraculously recovered, thanks to which the icon was decorated with a silver gilded robe as a sign of gratitude. After the revolution, the Alekseyevsky Monastery was closed and destroyed. The icon “Goalkeeper of Uglich” remained outside the monastery, being in the church of Tsarevich Dimitri “on the field”. One of the parishioners of the church of Tsarevich Dimitri created a magnificent handmade copy, embroidering the image of the” Goalkeeper of Uglich”, also known as the”Unquenchable Candle”. For many years, a small list of the “Goalkeeper of Uglich” was kept by the confessor and pilgrim monk Alexander, possibly given to him by one of the last inhabitants of the Alekseevsky monastery. On the upper part of this icon you can see the inscription “Hail, Light of the Unquenchable Fire of the Immaterial”, indicating the appearance of such a name in the late XIX — early XX century. Today, the icon “Unquenchable Candle” continues to perform miracles of healing. According to the acts drawn up by the Yaroslavl Ecclesiastical Consistory, from 1894 to the present, more than forty miraculous healings have taken place at this icon. Believers turn to the Queen of Heaven with faith, trusting in Her intercession before God, and find comfort and healing through prayers before this wondrous image.
