Icon of the Mother of God “Mammalian”

Icon of the Mother of God “Mammalian”

Celebration: July 22, March 5 (rolling)
One of the lists of the ancient wonderworking Cypriot icon of the Most Holy Theotokos is associated with the Stromyn Monastery, located in the former Bogorodsky district of the Moscow Diocese, although the monastery itself no longer exists. Today, this icon is located in the Assumption Church in the village of Stromyn. The Russian chronicles contain information about the creation of a monastery dedicated to the Dormition of the Most Holy Theotokos on the Dubenka River on Stromyn in 1379 by order of Grand Duke Dmitry Ivanovich. The monastery was built by Abbot Sergius, and the first church was the Assumption Church of the Most Pure Theotokos. According to legend, St. Sergius of Radonezh gave this ancient and revered image to his disciple, the second abbot of the Stromyn monastery named Savva. For a long time, the icon was an object of local veneration, but it became widely known after the case of healing an eighteen-year-old girl with her help from an illness in 1841. In this way, it was brought into general respect in the church community. The description of the icon of the Cyprus (Stromyn) Mother of God is as follows: the image of the Blessed Virgin in a crown, sitting on a throne. Above It, angels are seen with branches in their hands, and at the Feet of the Mother of God, the Holy Martyr Antipas and the Martyr Fotinia are kneeling. The icon was framed by a silver-and-gilt vestment. Despite the loss of the Stromyn Monastery, the Icon of the Mother of God of Cyprus (or Stromyn) continues to evoke veneration and reverence.
