Days of celebration: January 8
The icon shows the image of the Mother of God with the Baby in a rare composition, where Christ was depicted sleeping in the arms of His Mother. The gentle appearance of the Mother of God reflects deep spiritual sorrow. Her sad look at her Son indicates that she is aware of His upcoming suffering. The Mother of God carefully protects the peaceful childhood sleep of Christ, the Savior of the world. Just as a mother carefully watches over the peace of her child, so the Mother of God calms everyone who turns to Her with words of prayer in their spiritual and physical sorrows, and sends down Her heavenly help and protection. This is probably where the icon’s name comes from. The icon was created in the late XVIII-early XIX century. It is located on the Holy Mount Athos. One of the lists of the icon is located in the Ioannovsky Monastery in St. Petersburg, Russia.
